Calcutta to California ~ Jugalbandi Ensemble
Jugalbandi is the unusual art of multiple voices blended into an interactive ensemble format. This trio of sitar, sarod and tabla is the first India/USA ensemble of Hindustani classical music to conduct an international tour. As disciples of the legendary \'godfather of world music\' Pt. Ravi Shankar, Partho & Paul perform ragas in the tradition of the Maihar Gharana, the lineage of the 20th century monolith of Indian classical music, Ustad Allauddin Khan. Abhijit\'s accompaniment rounds out the ensemble, one of India\'s leading tabla players.
Utilizing traditional forms the ensemble perform their music with a contemporary neo-classical approach. Their unique presentation incorporates subtle touches of counterpoint and harmony in the compositions and improvisations while maintaining the integrity and depth of the Indian raga forms. From serene meditations to virtuoso flights of improvisation and rhythmic dynamism these artists express music from the heart in the moment.
